That was me back in 2007… I was a training and process leader in the supply chain division of a global product corporation where demand for our products was down, raw material prices were exorbitant (when the materials were available), and our customer relationships weren’t so good. Employee morale had taken a nosedive and everyone was in a funk. I was charged with the mission of fixing big people problems – as we spiraled down into a culture of poor performance and finger-pointing.
My mission was to lead my support team to turn the ship around. Did I mention that support teams (training, quality, and processes) are usually first to go when a business suffers? Yes… those are the first cuts – and my team felt the pressure in a very big way.
What happened next was mind-blowing. We transformed the laborious 6 month learning process for every new employee to wade through into a concise and complete 6 week program where new employees outperformed the average existing employee. And… not only that, but the performance of the existing employees improved as well.
The team did an incredible job of responding to the call with free tools and no training budget AND we became a destination group where other employees wanted to work. Our business leaders made sure career paths up the ladder incorporated time on our team before further advancement. Why? Because they knew we had the secret sauce of what expedited results and enabled new levels of employee performance.
Most satisfying for me, though, was how we improved the lives of employees.
What did we do? We focused on the WORK! That’s right… the work. We didn’t have endless meetings talking about stuff… we worked on stuff together. And, when you involve people on a team to a mission where everyone is crystal clear and committed, breakthroughs occur.
I’ve discovered (and repeated many times and in many environments), how to solve problems and improve business results while growing employee loyalty. It’s so much simpler than we think, honestly.
The solution always include two parts…
- How you start anything new (new employee, new products, new programs, etc.). This is called onboarding but most HR departments only focus on the first 10% of it… not the part that matters most to your business.
- How you solve problems with your existing employees.
You see, it’s not about doing more… it’s about doing what you must do differently. When you focus on your business and your people in tandem, it’s a beautiful thing!

The focus of my master’s degree in educational psychology was on adult learning in the workplace because I wanted to learn what I was missing in my previous years of training management. As I worked through the body of work in my field, I connected the dots between how we think, choose, feel, learn, and perform at work as individuals and as groups. I had the luxury of leading a team of professionally trained corporate trainers and continuous improvement folks (yes, think Six Sigma, if you’ve heard of that) as I tested out the critical path to sustainable results and great work culture. I’m blessed to have been down that road so I can help others now.
